Swedish laws about homebrewing

Inlägg av Helgibelgi »

Hej

Forgive me for not speaking swedish, but I am from Iceland and have not learned swedish yet. I also hope I am posting in the right seccion of this forum. If not, I'm sorry

I am a home brewer (at least in Iceland) and I am here in Sweden as an exchange student.

I wanted to ask you: how are the laws here about home brewing??

In Iceland it is illegal to brew beer that it stronger than 2,25% but of course every home brewer breaks that law.

Thank you in advance :)

Short answer:
In Sweden you are allowed to brew beer as strong as you can, if i remember right, the limit on homebrewing is 20% vol in Sweden. (Here someone might correct me though)
so if you want to make a 5,5% or a 9% beer, go ahead. Its Legal.

I agree with the above, it's made easy for once.
But also want to add, DON'T sell it to anyone at no matter what! Without digging deep into permits/taxes/law...

More or less the law states its legal to brew beer in your home for personal consumption.
"I hemmet för eget bruk"

There is no longer any limit on how high ABV you may brew your beer, as far as I remember, but you may not distill it, only ferment it.

There is/was a rule that x% of the fermentable sugars had to come from grain, but it slips my mind currently.

So basically, if you want to brew and ferment beers using all grain (or only slight amount of sugars), not include any destilling, do it where you live (your home) and only for personal (e.g. you, your family, your mates) consumption, never ever sell it or "trade" it for other goods or favours, it is perfectly legal.

My hope is hops

Thank you so much for answering so quickly :D

Unfortunately I will not be brewing beer here in Sweden, due to my lack of equipment

My brewing will have to wait until I return to Iceland. Until then I will be reading this forum about your brewing experience :)

Cheers!

I am studying in Karlstad (in Värmland) at Karlstad University. I will be here for one semester and since I can't be brewing while I'm here, I want to taste all the Swedish beers!

I personally don't know of any homebrewers in Karlstad, but I'm sure there are some, hoppefully you can get in contact with one or a few via this forum, perhaps you can brew with someone?

I'd also recommend checking out the "Discussionsforum" at
http://www.humle.se/
and also this site:
http://beersweden.forumflash.com/index. ... bryggning/

Good luck with the studies and finding Swedish beers, Systembolaget is great, and the Bishops Arms in Karlstad is nice.
